Well, I guess that Maddux and Luce started to really watch Nola prance around all over the place and they both decided that they were not to be outdone. Literally, a day after I wrote the previous post both Maddux and Luce started walking! I was completely shocked to see Maddux take off because he was showing no desire or interest in walking, but overnight he decided that he was going to walk! They are marching around all over the place! Nola is still the steadiest walker. She really focuses on her balance and watches where she's going whereas the other two still get pretty excited and are practically running and they don't pay attention to toys and objects in the floor and just stumble over them! But, it doesn't slow them down, they just pop back up and keep on going. I just have to say how excited and relieved I am to see them all walking. It was one of those things that we didn't know for sure would happen. It was just a wait and see kind of thing. We didn't know if they would need the help of a physical therapist or any special devices to help them learn to walk. Thank you God! We can check this one off the list!!!
On another note, the kids experienced their first sickness over the Memorial Day weekend. Since RSV season is over, I felt comfortable taking them out and about. We all get bored inside this house everyday so I have been looking forward to the summer to be able to get out. Last Wednesday I took the kids to Derrick's office for a visit. So many of his coworkers have been so supportive since the beginning and I knew that everyone would enjoy seeing them. Our visit was cut a little short and since we had some extra time on our hands I decided to take them to my former employers office to see everyone there. Both visits were awesome. The kids were great and enjoyed seeing everyone. Thursday was uneventful. On Friday Derrick and I had planned a much needed date night. During the day Luce had been running a slight fever but nothing too alarming. I knew that she was cutting more teeth so I assumed that may be the reason for the temperature. I got dressed and ready to go when just as we were leaving she felt super hot. She was running a 103 fever so I called the doctor and we decided to stay home. The nurse on call told me that it sounded like a viral infection since she had no other symptoms and to give her Motrin, use a cold compress and have her drink lots of cold fluids. She seemed a little uncomfortable and confused as to why she didn't feel well. We put a cold compress on her head, back and stomach and by about 11:00pm her fever had come down. I tried to brace myself for the inevitable, that all three would probably get sick. Everyone seemed okay on Saturday. They were all running slight fevers but nothing too high. By Sunday, I thought that maybe we were safe. The babies were playing and seemed happy. We decided to give our date night another shot. I got dressed and ready and just as we were about to walk out the door, Maddux's fever shot up. It happened so fast. Maddux's fever was actually worse than Luce's and got as high as 104.3. I again called the nurse on call (of course all of this is happening on a weekend, a holiday weekend no less) and she told me to try all of the things that we did with Luce and if the fever still didn't come down to put Maddux in a tepid bath. If the fever still didn't come down and started to approach 105 then we needed to head to the ER. So, I had to wake Maddux up from a dead sleep and put him in a cold bath. I just knew he was going to throw a fit but he was such a little trooper. He just smiled and splashed and had a big time. Poor buddy. Thankfully, the bath worked and his fever came down. Nola of course also had a fever that night but hers never got higher than 102 and we were able to control it with Mortin. By Monday everyone's fevers were down. To make matters worse, Monday night Maddux had a really rough time with what I can only assume was painful teething. He was inconsolable. We tried everything under the sun to figure out what was wrong with him. He kept putting his hands in his mouth so I think it was a combination of not feeling well from the virus and teething. The following night we numbed his gums really well with Oragel and he went out like a light. So, finally, for the past two nights we've all gotten some much needed sleep. I hope and pray that we are finally on the road to recovery! I feel very fortunate that the kids are almost 18 months old and this is the first time that we've had to deal with a sickness. Most of my friend's kids have fevers all the time. But still, it was very hard and stressful for everyone. I know that this is going to happen, especially since we will be getting out more. I can't keep them locked up in the house forever just because I'm worried about them getting sick. It's just all part of it I guess!
And finally, here are a few pics from the beach trip!
